Heat Wave (Nikki Heat)

A trophy wife with a past survives a narrow escape from a brazen attack. Mobsters and moguls with no shortage of reasons to kill trot out their alibis. And then, in the suffocating grip of a record heat wave, comes another shocking murder and a sharp turn in a tense journey into the dirty little secrets of the wealthy. Secrets that prove to be fatal. Secrets that lay hidden in the dark until one NYPD detective shines a light. Mystery sensation Richard Castle, blockbuster author of the wildly best-selling Derrick Storm novels, introduces his newest character, NYPD Homicide Detective Nikki Heat. Tough, sexy, professional, Nikki Heat carries a passion for justice as she leads one of New York City's top homicide squads. She's hit with an unexpected challenge when the commissioner assigns superstar magazine journalist Jameson Rook to ride along with her to research an article on New York's Finest. PulitzerPrize-winning Rook is as much a handful as he is handsome. His wise-cracking and meddling aren't her only problems. As she works to unravel the secrets of the murdered real estate tycoon, she must also confront the spark between them. The one called heat. Will the real Rchard Castle stand up?
2009-11-19
For fans of the TV show " Castle", this is a treat. This book is supposedly written by the TV character, Richard Castle. The book follows the premise of the TV Show and reads like an episode from the weekly dramedy.
For those who have no idea who Castle is, then this would be a quick read. The plot involves a journalist who is shadowing a detective squad while doing research for a magazine article. As the Homicide Detective, Nikki Heat, chaffs at having a nosy reporter follow her and her team when trying to solve a high-profile murder, she also finds the journalist attractive. And he has his moments. He knows everyone in town, plays poker with judges, knows celebrities and con artists and provides his expertise whenever he wants. Not that the detectives welcome it, mind you, he just runs his mouth whenever.
Clues, twists and turns lead the detectives on a chase to locate the murderer among a list of suspects. Money, or lack of, a cheating wife, a cheating husband, and mob characters, all come together to create a fast-paced and enjoyable romp through a Manhattan Heat Wave. As the bodies stack up, so do the clues. Finding out whio is guilty may take longer than expected.
The book is full of dialogue and easy to follow. When the "author" acknowledges the real-life actors from the show, its all one can do to keep a straight face. The picture of the author is actor Nathan Fillion who plays Castle on the TV show. The bio on the inside flap refers to Castle, the character, so the real mystery here is who is the actual author of this book?
Fun & Fast Read
2009-11-19
I love "Castle" and initially bought the book to support the show; however, "Heat Wave" turned out to be a really fun read...I could imagine Castle and Beckett in their various "aliases" in the book and it was like watching another episode. Great marketing, too! The book read really fast: next time I'd like to have a full-sized novel. I wholeheartedly recommend it to fans of the show--and anyone who likes a little mystery and humor!

Sherlock Holmes has long been a favorite of mine. Nothing's changed. He still is. Excellent book, both in contents and appearance.I love this stuff!
2009-09-19
Classic! I'm very glad to own this book in it's Kindle edition and for a very reasonable price too, $0.00!
There is not anything that I could write that hasn't been written before about Mr. Holmes and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These stories are timeless, they are indeed short stories and may be read quickly in one sitting, and, for me, be read again and again.
While reading these stories I can't help but see and hear Jeremy Brett, the ultimate and best Holmes of any visual media. Ever! The mannerisms of Holmes as written by Doyle, as well as much of the dialog, are transferred accurately and brilliantly to the small screen by Brett, the BBC, and PBS. I also recommend this series on DVD for any and all Holmes fans.
Not to forget "The Return of Sherlock Holmes," also priced reasonably on Kindle at $0.00.

I took my friends children for their first time to the KCLS and they each recieved their own library card and bragged to their friends and family about them. They learned about responsibility in taken care of books, to make sure they returned them on time and even liked to order them as holds if not in stock at the library. They were 13 and 9 at the time and from a broken home.
When the now 11 year old found out that he really wanted his own copy of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do it yourself book, I was thrilled and bought it for him on your awesome site. Thank you for helping it be easier to get children interested in reading!

Treasure Island
 · Author: Robert Louis Stevenson · Binding: Paperback · EAN: 9780394847252 · ISBN: 0394847253 · Label: Random House Childrens Books · Manufacturer: Random House Childrens Books · Product Group: Book · Publication Date: 1981-07 · Publisher: Random House Childrens Books · Studio: Random House Childrens Books » When former pirate Billy Bones leaves an old sea chest and an ancient treasure map at the Admiral Benbow Inn, young Jim Hawkins embarks on a treasure-hunting adventure that takes him to the South Seas. Muscular fiction at its best!
2009-09-24
When a foul-tempered old sailor, takes up residence at his parents' inn, young Jim Hawkins little realizes that the man is on the run. But, when the Captain dies with a group of pirates closing in, Jim ends up with a map to a huge pirate treasure in his hands. Now, together with Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney, the three find themselves a ship, and set out to find this marvelous treasure island. But there's dirty work afoot, and it will take all of Jim pluck and daring if he is going to win through to the treasure...or even just to stay alive!
Well, I have seen a number of movies based on this true classic of Western literature, but I have finally read the original story. As for me, I found it to be quite entertaining - filled with lots of danger and daring-do. I have read a lot of late 19th/early 20th century boy's book, and this one is the king of the genre. No yucky romance, indeed, little in the way of females at all. It's muscular fiction, of the sort that boys have read for many generations.
I must say that I really liked Mr. Stevenson's portrayal of the pirate life - trying to maintain order and discipline amongst a violent and highly-individualized crew, and so forth. I found the book to be very realistic, and all the more entertaining for that.
This is a great book, one that has stood the test of time and truly deserves to be called a classic. I highly recommend this book to all boys, and all men who are boys at heart! (And, to all girls who like muscular fiction!)Great pirate yarn
2009-08-10
I've actually never read this before, but since I could get it for free on my Kindle, I thought it was worth a try. So right! It deserves its reputation. A swashbuckling tale of intrigue and fun. Truly worth the time it took to read it.

Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan
 · Author: Jake Adelstein · Binding: Hardcover · Dewey Decimal Number: 364.10952 · EAN: 9780307378798 · Edition: 1 · Feature: ISBN13: 9780307378798 | Condition: NEW | Notes: Brand New from Publisher. At nineteen, Jake Adelstein went to Japan in search of peace and tranquility. What he got was a life of crime . . . crime reporting, that is, at the prestigious Yomiuri Shinbun. For twelve years of eighty-hour workweeks, he covered the seedy side of Japan, where extortion, murder, human trafficking, and corruption are as familiar as ramen noodles and sake. But when his final scoop brought him face to face with Japan’s most infamous yakuza boss—and the threat of death for him and his family—Adelstein decided to step down . . . momentarily. Then, he fought back. In Tokyo Vice, Adelstein tells the riveting, often humorous tale of his journey from an inexperienced cub reporter—who made rookie mistakes like getting into a martial-arts battle with a senior editor—to a daring, investigative journalist with a price on his head. With its vivid, visceral descriptions of crime in Japan and an exploration of the world of modern-day yakuza that even few Japanese ever see, Tokyo Vice is a fascination, and an education, from first to last. Gaijin with perspective
2009-11-19
This is what a memoir about Japan should be: educational, entertaining, and rife with valuable, real life experience that just happened to be gained far from home. Any mention of cultural comparison is couched in humor or insight rather than the typical, self-indulgent, isolated whining one usually finds in memoirs of westerners living in Asia. Adelstein's story is a rare glimpse into a subculture most people -- Japanese or otherwise -- will never see. A great read and very highly recommended!
Good despite flaws
2009-11-18
I bought this book because I was drawn to the curiosity of an American becoming a newspaper reporter in Japan and in this respect the book did not disappoint. I read avidly through the first half of the book, fascinated by the details of Mr. Adelstein's experiences with the Yomiuri Shimbun, like the oddity of nightly visits to police detectives' homes and the ethical dilemma of having a Japanese police officer pay for a visit to a massage parlor.
I thought the later chapters of the book lacked clarity of purpose. Much of the author's conflict with the yakuza isn't adequately explained and casts a hysterical shadow over his credibility. That's not to say I think he's making up the loss of his junkie prostitute friend: only that he doesn't really give enough evidence to show that the Goto-gumi hate his guts as much as he claims they do. I almost feel that there's a lot of personal turmoil that the author chose not to reveal that obscured the later chapters of the book.
I think this would have been a better book if it had focused on his time at the Yomiuri Shimbun and left the Goto-gumi for another, more honest, book. However, it's still worth reading.

2009-11-14
As the title says -- it's about writing and life. And it gives excellent advice on both. So nice to have a successful writer admit to the frustrations as well as the joy of the creative process. So honest, so funny, so educational. Loved it.Inspiring and Useful for Writers
2009-10-22
This book was recommended to me when I enrolled in a creative writing workshop. I've never tried my hand at writing, though I've often thought about it, but I was plagued by fear of my own inadequacies and any number of neurotic thoughts.
This book was like a best friend lovingly holding my hand, cheering in my corner, and handing me a stiff gin and tonic when I most needed it. Anne Lamott is an amazing writer, both funny, honest, direct, inspiring, and thoughtful all at the same time.
If you're that oddball who has thought about writing (or any other kind of creative work) this book is for you. She incorporates life advice with writing advice, along with a great deal of funny wisdoms along the way. Well written, short, and absolutely amazing. I bought this book for another friend who has wanted to write for some time, but for various reasons has been holding back. She found it equally inspiring and a great read.

Each journal features the beautiful and instantly-recognizable Twilight Saga cover art and is fully-designed throughout with images and decorative quotes from each of the books, as well as some of the classic works of literature that inspired them. Very Elegant
2009-11-17
I kept going back and forth on if I should buy this set, I thought the swirls on the lid were just painted on. I finally broke down and purchased it thinking that if I didn't like it my nieces would. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the details of the lid are stamped in. In fact it's very elegant. (I like running my fingers over them LOL) Had I known that, this would have definitely been a pre-order.
The books themselves are great! Each one is glossy, hardbound and not only has quotes from the books, but quotes that inspired the author.
A quick example:" In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."~Darcy to Elizabeth, Pride and Prejudice
Then, they even included a small detail, the quotes from the Twilight Books are in the handwriting of the person who said it.
There is a short preface by Stephenie Meyer and random pages with a faint picture of a forest.
I have to say that just looking at the tin container, then looking at the price, is an incredible deal!
In my opinion, life is so short and precious to just let the pretty things, or collectibles, gather dust on the shelf. I'm eager to start filling in the awaiting pages. Elegant
2009-11-13
If you are a Twilight fan or know someone that is and enjoy writing, these are the perfect gift.
The tin they come in is very elegant, and you would never know there are journals inside.
The holidays are right around the corner; what a great gift!
