We'll Meet Again: Very Best of Vera Lynn

· Artist: Vera Lynn · Binding: Audio CD · EAN: 0602527159836 · Label: Decca · Manufacturer: Decca · MPN: 001364102 · Number Of Discs: 1 · Product Group: Music · Publisher: Decca · Release Date: 2009-11-03 · Studio: Decca · UPC: 602527159836
» After more than 60 years, the utterly distinctive timbre of Vera Lynn's voice still brings a special poignancy to these ballads of hope and heartache. We'll Meet Again - The Very Best of Vera Lynn is a nostalgic collection of songs from the height of Dame Vera's popularity including her greatest hits: "We'll Meet Again", "The White Cliffs Of Dover", "Yours, It's A Lovely Day Tomorrow" and the immortal song "As Time Goes By" featured in the film hit of 1944 Casablanca. This new collection containing 24 of the most popular songs from her early years proved an instant hit with the UK reaching #1 on the UK charts. At 92, Dame Vera made chart history as the oldest artist to achieve such a feat. The Times (UK) declared, "It's official: Vera Lynn is bigger than the Beatles" while The Guardian noted Vera Lynn is "still our sweetheart." The Vera Lynn spirit has an optimistic and heartening message that proves timeless. Her songs have just as much relevance today as they did back when mankind plunged into the madness of WWII.exquisite sophistication even if this isn't truly a "very best of" album--THANK YOU, VERA LYNN !!!
2009-11-11
This "very best of" Vera Lynn compilation CD has much to offer although as another reviewer, Mr. Harris, notes there are songs that really should have been included instead of a few of the songs we get here. For example, while we get standards like "We'll Meet Again" and "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover," "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "My Son My Son," Vera's number-one hit from the 1950s, are just not here! On the bright side again, however, Vera's voice is as clear as a bell on this entire album; and you'll enjoy that when you hear these ballads and songs all performed with panache and genuine emotion. These songs showcase Vera's talent very well. The quality of the sound is very good and the artwork is nicely done.

"(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover" starts the album off with a marvelous, ageless song that Vera sings faultlessly. I like that piano arrangement and it all holds its own very well. "Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart" is certainly very easy on the ear; and "We'll Meet Again" charms me with its natural beauty. I love it!

"As Time Goes By" from the movie "Casablanca" gets the royal treatment from Vera Lynn who delivers this without letting go of a single superfluous note. The lush musical arrangement enhances this ballad even more; and I also really like Vera's rendition of "Dream." "Dream" is one of my favorite numbers on this CD. "Faraway Places" is also quite well done; and Vera does a superb version of "If You Love Me" which I first heard sung in French and English by Edith Piaf. Piaf would have certainly approved of Vera's treatment of this poignant love song!

"The Loveliest Night of the Year" is wonderful; I could never tire of listening to Vera Lynn sing this splendid tune! "Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye" is another classic that Vera delivers passionately; and there's yet another gem when Vera sings "When I Grow Too Old to Dream." I think you'll like "When I Grow Too Old to Dream" very much.

There's a stunning medley of "Somewhere Along The Way;" "Here In My Heart" and "Let The Rest Of The World Go By;" Vera's singing makes these songs sound so new and fresh while the backup singers harmonize to perfection--and beyond! Of course, Vera never really needed backup, but they do sound good. The album ends with two magnificent numbers: "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" and "From the Time You Say Goodbye (The Parting Song)." What a terrific way to end this CD!

Vera Lynn will never be forgotten; and I share Mr. Harris' hopes that more of her music will be re-released for us to enjoy over and over again. This album is a must have for Vera Lynn fans even if it isn't truly a "best of" single CD compilation; there's not a single dud in the bunch here. This even makes a fine starter CD for people just discovering the magical artistry of the great Vera Lynn.
A nice compilation
2009-10-01
I read of this compilation, released in August to commemorate WWII beginning 70 years ago, shooting past Beatles re-masters et al to Number 1 in the British Charts, making Dame Vera Lynn at 92 the oldest person to hold the Number 1 spot (move over, Bob Dylan). Out of curiosity I bought it and it's arrived. Nice CD. Good singer. Good sound ... the earliest recordings show their age but only slightly (occasional quiet crackles, but nothing intrusive). The notes give no recording date details, but it appears that over half of the tracks are post-WWII recordings (though nothing newer than 1953), including a re-recording of "We'll Meet Again."

I do like this enough to go looking for that compilation ("Forces Sweetheart") recommended by another reviewer here, Mr. Harris (Thank you!).

Btw, the songs on this CD are:

1. (There'll Be Blue Birds Over) The White Cliffs Of Dover
2. Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart
3. We'll Meet Again
4. Travellin' Home
5. As Time Goes By
6. Dream
7. Faraway Places
8. Harbour Lights
9. It's A Lovely Day Tomorrow
10. If You Love Me
11. When You Hear Big Ben

The Kinks Choral Collection

· Artist: Ray Davies & the Crouch End Festival Chorus · Binding: Audio CD · EAN: 0602527039091 · Label: Decca · Manufacturer: Decca · MPN: 001343402 · Number Of Discs: 1 · Product Group: Music · Publisher: Decca · Release Date: 2009-11-10 · Studio: Decca · UPC: 602527039091
» After massively successful career spanning more than 40 years, Ray Davies, the legendary lead singer of The Kinks, is back with creative and unusual interpretations of songs from his extensive catalogue. Often referred to as "almost indisputably rock's most literate, witty and insightful songwriter," Davies had the ambitious idea to collaborate with the 65-strong Crouch End Festival Chorus at the 2007 BBC Electric Proms in London to create The Kinks Choral Collection. This masterful CD will be in stores November 10th on Decca with a nationwide tour scheduled to coincide with the release. (U.S. dates to be announced soon.)

Produced by Davies himself and with uplifting, sometimes epic, choral arrangements by David Temple, Steve Markwick and Davies, this union casts a fresh light to some of The Kinks' timeless compositions including striking new versions of classics such as "You Really Got Me", "All Day And All Of The Night", "Waterloo Sunset" and many more. Ray said of his Crouch End vocal colleagues; "With a song like `Waterloo Sunset', I feel as if the people I wrote it for are singing it". And they display an ingenious palette of choral techniques. Hearing `See My Friends' recast as an acappella gospel hymn is instantly striking, hugely magnifying the impact of Ray's life-after-death lyrics.

A fascinating feature of the program includes a six-song suite from the 1968 album The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society. Although not as well known as some of the bigger hits, this collection is now widely regarded as The Kinks' masterpiece, with songs like "Do You Remember Walter?" which is a poignant memoir of a vanished childhood world.

Overall this inspirational new album offers so much to explore and admire from fans who own the entire Kinks catalogue on vinyl or to complete newcomers. This is a great introduction to Davies' idiosyncratic, delightful world. A slice of pop history revived: "Thank you for the days . . . Days I'll remember all my life".

Different and Entertaining
2009-11-17
I didn't know what to expect, but I was blown away by the first song (Days). Ray's voice is still at the top of his game (at least with the help of studio recording), and the additon of the choir doing countrapuntal harmony (I think that's what it is called) was beautiful.

As I continued to listen, I was surprised when one tune turned out to be You Really got Me.

During parts of the CD it sounded as though I was in church, but these songs are better than anything I've every heard in a place of worship.

Overall, I really enjoyed the CD. But you have to know I've been a die hard Kinks and Ray Davies fan since the 60's.
A great idea - Not completely realized
2009-11-16
As a completely bananas crazy Kinks fan, I was really intrigued with this project and immediately downloaded it once I heard it was available. All in all, I would definitely recommend it to others, with a few reservations.

On the good side, it seems like the chorale does a wonderful job of filling out the songs, which often felt a bit underdeveloped on most of the Kinks' records. Ray writes Big Songs about important concepts by focusing on the smallest of details. The music on Kinks's records often feels too delicate and brittle, as though it could break at any moment. The emotions are so fragile and complicated, and the music reflects that. The chorus fleshes out these songs and makes them feel fuller, more lush, and in some senses compelling. The more complicated and better realized songs (Shangri-La, Village Green, See My Friends, and sort of the Village Green suite) really make the album worth the purchase.

On the down side, it seems that Ray could have definitely gone further with the concept and more fully developed and complicated the arrangements. The chorus sounds lovely and beautiful, and on the above mentioned songs, they are used more aggressively and add amazing new depth and richness to these precious songs. I would have liked to see more use of them as such.

Similarly, the greatness of the rest of the Kinks' musicianship is definitely noticed. Ray's guitar, Mick's drums, Pete, John, & Jim's bass, even Ian's keyboards (of which I was not as much of a fan) really stand out in comparison to the workman-like band on this album. This was particularly the case with the two big rockers included here (You Really Got Me and All Day and All of the Night) which sound anemic and probably should have been cut out - the chorale sounds superfluous and a bit silly, really.

Nonetheless, I would recommend this album for the 6 or so gems that really explode out of it - even for newcomers to the Kinks. That said, be certain to hear the originals if you've not, as they are heartbreaking treasures.

» 2009 release from Blackie Lawless and the boys. W.A.S.P., the multi-platinum U.S. Metal rockers return with their strongest CD to date! Themed around the biblical visions of The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, Blackie and his crew have created a Metal masterpiece that will leave fans, both old and new, craving for more. Nine tracks. Demolition."The Hills Are Running Red" : Blackie Burns Us Alive
2009-11-14
No one can carry off a cd with sheer attitude like Blackie. All Lawless has to do is show up. I'm not going to say this is one of his greatest cds, but this starts and finishes with a lot of b@ll$. This isn't the apocalyptic, burned earth, scorching humanity cd that Blackie promised, but it's darn close; and it's closer than a lot of other bands have gotten lately. It opens with three songs that are all rockers to remember. "Crazy" begs to be performed live. Mike Dupke frakking kills the skins on this one; this is a drummer's dream; just pound em till the stands break. (And I might as well go ahead and say it. If there was a highlight on this whole cd for me, it was Dupke the whole d@mn time killing the drums and Blair absolutely laying a wall of fire down when he finally gets to cut loose. Blair doesn't do so the whole cd long, but when he does, it's so volatile that it's just inspiring.) The next one, "Live To Die Another Die" sounds like a follow up to "Dying For The World," and that's not a bad thing. It's got the same theme (living to kill to die some other time), the same vibe, and a rousing chorus that's blood boilingly good. "Babylon's Burning" is a dark toned rocker that could have just as easily been the opener. Doug Blair burns up his guitar on this one. "Burn" (the Deep Purple tune, of course) is a cover that W.A.S.P. had originally intended for a bonus version of the Dominator cd, but it never saw the light of day for some reason (even though it was listed, bizarrely, on track listings on many retailer's sites - including 's - ) is alright; it admittedly fits the Revelation / Apocalypse idea of the whole cd (a woman who's the "devil's sperm" and sets cities aflame and all), but I guess I've heard this so many times from DP and Coverdale (Whitesnake) that it just didn't add anything all that new. It was interesting to hear how Blackie tackles some of the vocals (he stretches out the word "burn" in the chorus as long as it'll go without any change in pitch), but that's about it. For the W.A.S.P. Nation, "Into the Fire" might sound a little like something you've heard before (I won't say what so I don't ruin the song for someone new to Blackie & Boys), but it's still a strong, strong tune. Blackie's got a wail that moves into a tortured growl that's just to die for, so play on. I actually have found myself listening to this again and again, actually. "Thunder Red" actually starts off with a borrowed riff from "Burn" and quickly moves into a fast-paced rocker that's a blitzkrieg that you'll either like or not. It hits hard and moves right on into "Seas of Fire," a song that opens with a theatrical build-up, and I got to say that I really like this one. Blackie's said repeatedly that he's best when he's on a b!tc# trip, and he hits it on this one. It's about "waking up" in chaos and "making up the bed" that you've been making for yourself all along. If you don't like the "seas of fire" that you've created, well, oh, well, oh, h&ll, say hello to them anyway. You'll be there awhile. Awesome stuff. This is another six-string sizzler for Blair. "Godless Run" is an introspective song like we've heard on the Neon God cd and the Jonathon saga. Pretty good stuff, though, because Blair skillfully puts a lot of hardcore fills into a near ballad. I don't know how, but even when I think "Man, Blackie, that sounds just like that song on . . .," well, I find myself getting absolutely caught up in it anyway. Now, if you need more proof that the end is right go&&@mn knocking on your door, here it is: Blackie Lawless and W.A.S.P. covering a Chuck Berry tune! But, folks, he absolutely rips it apart. You've got to hear this one to believe. Trust me or not, it's an @$$-kicker. People are saying this is not a great cd. I disagree. Put it chest to chest with anything you've listened to me lately, and tell me it doesn't stand up. You'd be wrong. Blackie's still the blackest mother&%*^er on the planet, folks.

I thought that perhaps some of the others would be great songs as well.

» 2007 UK single-disc collection from the R&B and Pop vocalist, one of the biggest, and best-selling, female artists of all time. She's broken countless records throughout her career, has had consistent success in music and in film, since her debut single "Saving All My Love For You" in 1985. Her music combined big adult ballads with stylish pop and slick contemporary urban soul and her voice is a benchmark that has not since been equaled. This 18 track compilation features her absolute best hits including 'I Will Always Love You', 'Greatest Love Of All', 'Exhale (Shoop Shoop)', 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody', 'Saving All My Love For You' and many more. The previous Greatest Hits collection was a two CD set that featured remixes and more, but this single-disc collection offers the cream of the crop! Sony/BMG.Gotta love Whitney!

Brahms: Complete Symphonies

· Binding: Audio CD · Creator (Role: Composer): Johannes Brahms | (Role: Composer): Unspecified | (Role: Conductor): Simon Rattle | (Role: Orchestra): Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra · EAN: 5099926725420 · Format: Box set | Enhanced · Label: EMI Classics · Manufacturer: EMI Classics · Number Of Discs: 3 · Product Group: Music · Publisher: EMI Classics · Release Date: 2009-01-01 · Studio: EMI Classics
» Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker have recorded the complete symphonies of Johannes Brahms live in a series of concerts from the Philharmonie, Berlin. This is a major recording of music that is central to the tradition of the 127-year-old orchestra, and is bound to be as groundbreaking and revelatory as Rattle's earlier recording of the complete Beethoven symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic. The combination of the incomparable sound and musicianship of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the iconoclastic, visionary approach that has characterized Sir Simon's music-making over the past thirty years is likely to result in a set of recordings that will challenge, invigorate, and refresh this well-known and cherished repertoire. Rattle's first Brahms recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Ein deutsches Requiem, won critical accolades and both Grammy® and Classic FM/Gramophone Awards. Now Sir Simon and the Orchestra have committed to disc the complete Brahms symphonies, recorded in concert at Berlin's Philharmonie in Autumn of 2008. In the words of Die Zeit, "Simon Rattle has finally dared to tackle Brahms with the Berliner Philharmoniker. He combines Furtwängler's monumentality with Karajan's beautiful sound . . .". Rattle confirms that performing these works with the Berliner Philharmoniker, which has been hailed as the world's greatest Brahmsian, orchestra "gives you a possibility of colours that you have almost nowhere else. . . . I can say to this orchestra, `I need a different sound' and the sound changes immediately."Rattle's Brahms First reveals sublime beauty
2009-11-24
I've just come from hearing Rattle conducting the Berlin Philharmonic live in the First Symphony of Brahms, so while I haven't yet heard this recording I think it's fair to assume the interpretation on disc will be close to what the audience listened to tonight. It was sublime. Those who commented that Rattle does not unleash a Karajan tidal wave of sound are correct, but it was not missed. Instead, we heard what seemed like Brahms' intentions suddenly unveiled-- as chromatically fresh as the Sistine Chapel after its restoration. Phrasing, too, is presented anew. One hears echoes of Beethoven, but Wagner, too. And, I think Rattle even brings out moments that anticipate Mahler.

If the first movement was perhaps less exciting than in some other performances, the second and third were perhaps the most beautiful I've ever heard. And if the alpine tune in the 4th movement was perhaps more idyllic than titanic, the recapitulation and finale caught harmonic and rhythmic fire in a manner I've never heard before and hope never to forget. The audience was enraptured. The ovation was almost as loud as that which followed Dudamel's performance at Disney with his Venezuelan Youth Orchestra.

It was well deserved. On the stairs leaving the building, members of the audience were hushed yet aglow, sharing glances around at the other ones lucky enough to have heard this.

If the recording is anything like the concert, it will be worth adding to a collection.
Success with standard repertoire
2009-11-21
Finally, Rattle has produced standard repertoire renditions that can be considered a milestone. This release is the finest, most consistent set of Brahms symphonies since the Klemperer boxed set. He may be a little soft-grained at times, particularly in the first sypmhony where Klemperer is more heroic and menacing, but he has the full measure of the second and fourth which are equal with the best. His third, while excellent, does not have the cohesive drive that Toscanini brought to his performance with the Philhamonia Orchestra during his 1952 tour of England. Karajan, in all his series, is far too self-indulgently obsessive with rich sonorities, and Abbado's performances of the symphonies are four-square, unimaginatively phrased and plodding. A must-have set for all Brahms lovers.

» The Education score is by Paul Englishby. It features 'Smoke Without Fire' performed by Duffy 'Your Heart Is As Black As Night' performed by Melody Gardot and 'J'ai Deux Amours' performed by Madeleine Peyroux. The movie is set in 1960s London, Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is a bright 17 year old preparing to go to Oxford. After she meets a much older man (Peter Saarsgard) who smoothly romances her with flattery, stories and weekends in Paris, Jenny abandons her University plans, to the horror and consternation of her hard working father (Alfred Molina) and a teacher (Emma Thompson). Jenny must come of age and decide what is her real education. Soundtrack is by noted composer Paul Englishby (Miss Pettigrew Lives for A Day) and includes recognizable 60s pop songs performed by Ray Charles, Mel Torme, Juliette Greco and Percy Faith. Duffy will perform a new song written exclusively for this film. An Education is based on the novel by Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, About A Boy) and is directed by Lone Scherfig. An Education received critical acclaim this past year when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as at the Berlin Film Festival. It opens in the U.S. on October 9 followed by releases in Europe and Australia.Great movie with great music
2009-11-14
Hey, ! "An Education" is not based on a novel by Nick Hornby. It's a screenplay by Nick Hornby based on a memoir -- a factual story, not a novel -- by the writer Lynn Barber. Moreover, Jenny's abandonment of her university plans is NOT meant with consternation by her father. I won't spoil the movie by saying what his reaction is, but your summary is incorrect on a pretty crucial plot point.

I don't own the CD, but I intend to buy it based on how much I enjoyed the music in the film. The original soundtrack material is wonderful, especially the opening theme, but you will also enjoy Mel Torme, Ray Charles, Vince Guaraldi, Madeleine Peyroux and the new song by Duffy that runs over the credits. Very strong.
This is a GREAT soundtrack

» It should be little surprise that of the three Prince of Egypt CDs, this one, which contains music actually used in the picture, is the best. The disc features songs written by Academy Award winners Stephen Schwartz and Hans Zimmer. It also showcases the always impressive vocal talents of Ofra Haza on several tracks. The disc also crams in a few singles--ranging from the solid Boyz II Men track "I Will Get There" to the average "The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe)" by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to the dismal "Through Heaven's Eyes," by K-Ci & JoJo. But ultimately, Haza steals the show on tracks like "Cry" and the gorgeous "Deliver Us," performed with Eden Riegel. Other standouts include "Playing with the Big Boys," by Steve Martin and Martin Short, and a pleasant, if not unexpected, vocal by Michelle Pfeiffer on "When You Believe." --Aaron TassanoGreat music! If you like Disney, you will love this.

A lot of the music is just instrumental, but the ones that do have words are powerful and beautiful. It is worth buying for what-- $3?-- just to get the 5 or 6 vocal songs that are amazing.

Excellent CD------A class act-----Every song is well remembered----This is an era that I truly appreciate, even though I was in high school in the '50,s
terrific music by The Grass Roots, but MCA could have added another song or two
2009-07-22
The Grass Roots had a sound all their own, thanks to their enormous creativity. They enjoyed great success in their heyday; and it's wonderful that to this day we can easily obtain a CD of their artistry like this one! The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and I like the artwork a lot. My only disappointment is that the running time of this CD is a mere 46 minutes; they could have added another song or two to make this an even better compilation.

The album starts off with The Grass Roots doing their major hit entitled "Let's Live for Today." They perform this with panache and the tune just plain sounds good. The percussion enhances the music all the more--and that music fits in perfectly with their vocals! I love it. "Where Were You When I Needed You" is another of The Grass Roots' great songs; they handle complex tempo and key changes like the pros they always were and still remain. "Things I Should Have Said" is quite catchy even if the lyrics aren't all that happy; I really like "Things I Should Have Said." In addition, "My Midnight Confessions" stuns me--this music is all THAT good. The Grass Roots do "My Midnight Confession" faultlessly and that beat will make you tapping your foot to the tune before you even realize it!

"Bella Linda" gets the royal treatment from The Grass Roots; they do this without ever letting go of a superfluous note and that's grand. The musical arrangement is just right on this track, too. "Lovin' Things" has a beautiful melody that impresses me a lot; and listen for "I'd Wait a Million Years" with that awesome musical introduction--this is another one of their best and just one listen will tell you why! "Baby Hold On" also features this band doing nothing short of their very best.

"Heaven Knows" has a terrific beat and when they harmonize they do it to perfection--and beyond! "Temptation Eyes" always sounds great to me; I really like this one, too. "Temptation Eyes" had The Grass Roots making it all look so easy--but of course we know it really wasn't all that easy; their talent carried them through every time. Moreover, "Two Divided by Love" is very well done; and that percussion again works wonders for the music to this song.

"Runway" is an excellent tune that only The Grass Roots could do this well; and it's a highlight of this album. The electric guitars enhance the music on "Runway," too. The CD ends quite strong, too, with The Grass Roots performing "Sooner or Later." This is a masterpiece in every way and I could never tire of hearing this group do "Sooner or Later."

Fans of The Grass Roots may want to pick this up if they don't already have some of these songs. This CD is also a great starter CD for those of us just getting into the sound of The Grass Roots; and this is even good for casual fans of this group as well.
