Poor Quality
2009-06-23
Surpisingly, most of my disks did not have scratch. A few did but not many.

However, many without scratches, had problems playing. The DVDs have what I call a smeared rainbow effect causing the DVDs to freeze or skip during playback. This is a manufacture defect and *some* players can still play them but not either one mine can.

What a shame.

Maybe you will get lucky and get one of the good batches.
Great Show, Bad Packaging

Do not buy this product. As everyone says below, the disks will be scratched when you take them out.

MASH is a great show, but this packaging is as bad as it gets. Too bad, because I was really looking forward to watching them.

Dad loved it
2009-02-24
I got this for my father for Xmas. He's a huge WW2 buff. He said the first dvd he watched was poor quality and he was worried but that the others were great. My step mom said she wanted to quit her job so she could stay home and watch them all over and over again. So it was a hit. For the price especially, I think it's a great deal.

AMERICA: STORIES OF WAR 36 DVD COLLECTION from MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT combines their previously issued 24 disc war documentary set with COMBAT CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK, for a total of 170-plus hours of programming. Several of the documentaries included here are licensed exclusively to this manufacturer. Audio and video transfer quality is generally quite good, but does depend in some cases on condition of vintage stock footage.

This unique package consists of discs stored in heavy black paper envelopes; each has a circular-shaped cellophane window on one side for quick identification of the dvds. The set's container is a well-constructed olive drab tin replica of an ammunition box. The hinged lid is held securely closed at one narrow end by a spring-loaded clasp. It also has an attached lunch box style handle for easy transport. Opening the top reveals an insert photo of loose copper-tipped ammo. Flip this up for access to DVDs and a 40-page contents booklet.

Overview of DOCUMENTARIES--

AMERICA DIVIDED (2008) - Includes vintage maps, photos, newspapers and art, plus re-enactor footage and animated break-downs of troop movements during battle. Narration: Ray Foushee. Superior transfer quality.

THE WAR TO END WAR (2008) - Rare vintage films and photos, plus animated maps tell the story of the first global conflict of 1914-18. Narrator: Fred North. Good quality transfer.

GREAT BATTLES OF WORLD WAR II - Various contemporary U.S. gov't and studio shorts report the war's progress. Most show actual battle footage captured by Signal Corp and other cameramen. With contributions from Hollywood actors, directors and crews. Most films are in remarkably good condition for their age.

WAR IN EUROPE and WAR IN THE PACIFIC - "Europe" consists of 26 chapters while "Pacific" has 24. Certain segments appear dark. Some include modern narration. Hard to identify these as none have original credits. "Mill Creek" logo appears on-screen occasionally.

VICTORY AT SEA - Award-winning half-hour series first broadcast on the NBC-TV network in 1952. Scored by Richard Rodgers, with narration provided by Leonard Graves. Original films are well-preserved. Audio is muffled on some episodes.

THE FORGOTTEN WAR - Includes chapters of TV series "The Big Picture" that originally aired beginning in 1953, plus a John Ford-directed color documentary (that's blurry), Some titles have muffled sound, other appear grayish.

AMERICA'S CONFLICT - Color and b&w government-produced films of varying transfer quality are quite interesting overall. Famous actors contribute narration for some.

I guess I'm spoiled by Ken Burns. This documentary has actors, in period costumes, talking to the camera, reciting the lines where in a Burns documentary, we'd be treated to pictures, drawings, paintings etc. with an actor doing the voiceovers. I much prefer the latter as I found the use of actors talking to the camera distracting and at points even irritating, which detracted, for me anyway, from the documentary's content.
By far, the best of the bunch.
2009-03-21
I own this set, "The Revolution" by the History Channel, and the "American Revolution" series that A&E ran in the 1990s narrated by Bill Kurtis. This is, far and away, the best of the bunch.

"Liberty" does the best job of outlining the American Revolution in its full scope, giving much focus to the situation in the colonies before the first shots were fired. They pay a lot of attention to the Stamp Act, Boston Tea Party, and the Coercive / Intolerable Acts. By the time the actual war begins, you have a full understanding as to why it did.

They also do a very important service in focusing on what happened after the war. The revolution could very much have gone down in flames if it weren't for the framers of our Constitution. It was a very uncertain time, and "Liberty" does a fine job in showing us how we were able to maintain our republic.

The actors and actresses are fully believable, the background music is very moving, and the illustrations used are first rate.

I should add that if you are interested primarily in the military aspects of the American Revolution (i.e. the war itself), then you may be disappointed with this version and should probably consider one of the other two. This is the best overall view of the conflict - the revolution that was "in the hearts and minds of the people," as John Adams put it - and as a result some elements of the war are not included.

I enjoyed the episodes of Victory at Sea when I was a child and looked forward to seeing the complete series on DVD. Unfortunately, I did not find the footage nearly as enjoyable as I remembered. My biggest problem was with the music which was more of an annoying distraction away from these great clashes at sea than an enhancement to what is otherwise compelling footage. The great drama of these heroic sea encounters is also diminished by the ongoing wartime propaganda that, although understandable for its time and is part of the historic nature of the film, unfortunately, is pervasive in this series. And, too often, there appeares little purpose to the film clips other than to display American sea power and might through a blase of guns and bombs. Beyond this, however, the pictures are historic and, for the most part, quite gripping.
Great series

I have very fond memories of watching this series with my Dad when it was originally broadcast.

The DVDs were well done - good quality video and audio - and as memorable as I remembered from my childhood. I only wish my Dad was still here to provide his own comments and viewpoint.

» Victory at Sea, a 26-episode series on World War II, represented one of the most ambitious documentary undertakings of early network television.

The series premiered on the last Sunday of October 1952, and subsequent episodes played each Sunday afternoon through May 1953. Each half-hour installment dealt with some aspect of World War II naval warfare and highlighted each of the sea war's major campaigns. That drama was enhanced by the program's sententious voice-over narration and by Richard Rogers's stirring musical score.

Well familiar with the series. Also own on VHS. This DVD played in a 1080p upconverting DVD player looks very clean and crisp relative to the VHS copy. Viewers should maintain proper perspective when assessing the video quality in that the vast majority of the source films were produced during the late 1930s and early 1940s by combat camera personnel from various military organizations worldwide. Considering that fact, this DVD is excellent. Regarding the content of the program, the DVD includes all original episodes from the VAS series; without editing. A worthy addition to the video library of any WWII or Naval Warfare history buff.
    Just like I remembered it.

    2009-05-27
Given that there are 47 reviews of the series, I doubt there's much I can add. So let me go with impressions.

First off, the squadron is lucky to have Uncle. He's the one who keeps things running. If not smoothly, at least running. He's the guy who carries Flash off to bed when all Flash wants to do is have a go at Rex. Uncle gives Hart the word that the "chaps" are getting a bit bored of his stories about the Spanich Civil War.

The squadron's not quite so lucky in Skull, its intel officer. Though he can keep secrets (e.g., Fitz and his "friend"), he's just too damn smart for his own good, and manages to keep everyone constantly peeved at him.

The squadron's unfortunate in having Moggy. A great pilot, maybe, but a complete psycho more intent on killing anyone he can, any way he can.

Hart initially comes across as just there to have a good time, but as the war proceeds, and the losses mount, he can barely begin a conversation with the junior pilots without beginning to harangue and lecture. He's a natural fighter pilot, but the war gets to him.

Every episode begins with a squadron picture. It's kind of sad to see the picture change over time. Not in that the uniforms get more scruffy and relazed, but there are fewer people on display. By the time Churchill gives his "Few" speech, the surviving pilots really, really don't care. Moggy mocks it. A rest and a pint is mostly what everyone wants.

The story's a good one, but you really buy this for the sight of Spitfires in the air. If you're a true fanbiy, you'll scoff at the odd mix of marks (Vs and IXs, I think), but what utterly beautiful machines!
    Great story, sub-par transfer
    2009-02-15
This is an excellent drama centered on the Battle Of Britain, filled with memorable characters and great flying sequences. Everything about Piece Of Cake is first rate - except the transfer. The video is is grainy and poorly defined and the audio is not much better. It's a real shame that there is not a better transfer out there because it would immediately be added to my collection.

Still, it is definitely worth seeing for the production itself. If only it would get the transfer it deserves...

» PEARL HARBOR: THE DIRECTOR'S CUT Vista Series DVD is the most extensive exploration of moviemaking ever presented. Four discs showcase more than 60 new shots in the film and over 12 hours of new special features. There's never been anything like it before. History comes alive in the unforgettable epic motion picture PEARL HARBOR, the spectacular blockbuster brought to the screen by Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay. Astounding visual and audio effects put you at the center of the event that changed the world -- that early Sunday morning in paradise when warplanes screamed across the peaceful skies of Pearl Harbor and jolted America into World War II. This real-life tale of catastrophic defeat, heroic victory, and personal courage focuses on the war's devastating impact on two daring young pilots, Ben Affleck (ARMAGEDDON) and Josh Hartnett (BLACK HAWK DOWN), and a beautiful, dedicated nurse, Kate Beckinsale (SERENDIPITY). PEARL HARBOR is extraordinary moviemaking -- a breathtaking reenactment of the "date which will live in infamy" and a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who lived it.Pearl Harbor

    2009-06-04
After watching this film, I found it impossible to determine which crime was more atrocious: the bombing of Pearl Harbor or the creation of the film which was loosely based around it. Are Hideki Tojo and Hirohito any worse than Michael Bay and Ben Affleck? History will judge.
