Build Your Own Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS, 2nd Edition teaches web development from scratch, without assuming any previous knowledge of HTML, CSS or web development techniques. This book introduces you to HTML and CSS as you follow along with the author, step-by-step, to build a fully functional web site from the ground up.

However, unlike countless other "learn web design" books, this title concentrates on modern, best-practice techniques from the very beginning, which means you'll get it right the first time. The web sites you'll build will:

Look good on a PC, Mac or Linux computer Render correctly whether your visitors are using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, or Safari Use web standards so your sites will be fast loading and easy to maintain Be accessible to disabled users who use screenreaders to browse the Web

By the end of the book, you'll be equipped with enough knowledge to set out on your first projects as a professional web developer, or you can simply use the knowledge you've gained to create attractive, functional, usable and accessible sites for personal use.

Good Intro and Reference to CSS
2010-06-18
Before purchasing this book I had a thorough understanding of HTML. I also knew how to create websites with tables in Dreamweaver, which is how my college course taught me (ugh). I did use CSS, but only in Dreamweaver to manipulate text, background, and header styles. So I bought this book with the intention of creating websites in a more efficient way. I wasn't exactly excited to learn and write scripting languages due to my tendency to be more of a designer than a developer, but this book made the process enjoyable.

The book provides the underlying principles of HTML and CSS, and then guides the reader through the development of a simple scuba diving site. After completing the book and the site I felt I had a good grasp on the basics of CSS and HTML. It was simple to understand and the author does a good job of teaching how to think about how things interact, instead of just copying code. He also teaches how to stay organized in the process. Perhaps one of the most useful parts of the book is how many references he provides. The scuba site was simple, and in my opinion, a horrible design, but he gives enough to go on for more advanced stuff.

A month after completing the book I began designing and developing my first website for a local massage business, and after that a site for a political organization. I was staying up late into the wee hours trying to figure out how to get things to work the way I wanted on both of these sites, and this book didn't provide all the answers, but it gave me the foundation to build upon and understand what other web designers/developers were talking about on other forums, sites, blogs, etc.

Overall, a good book to get started.

Great Website Book
2010-04-22
This is a great how to book for building your own Website. It's well written and peels off all of the high tech jargon. I'm not a computer novice but also not an expert either and I was able to follow thru and complete my website easily. The book also has a lot of links to free sites to help keep the cost down which is a major plus.

Good Book - No Code Download...
2010-07-13
I just wanted to tell everyone that there is no code download off the books' support site.
You're required to submit a request for the code to be sent to you, but it never arrives. (I have a Gmail account and I checked my Spam)

Their support site has a FAQ section that states:

"I requested the code archive and didn't receive any email. What now?
The email should arrive within 10 minutes. If it has not arrived by then, check your spam filter to see if the email was filtered. You can try requesting the code archive again with a different email address, if you have one."

What a PITA... Can't they just post the code like WROX or Apress?
Had I known this before hand, I would have gotten a different book on jQuery, which is my advice.

Robert
Excellent Choice.

I've been leaning a little hard on Flash for some time now and decided to open my world to doing some exciting things without the confines of the Flash plug in. I'd stumbled on jquery occasionally and decided it would be a useful area to pursue in greater depth. I had no idea how far reaching and powerful it could be and this book is the perfect introduction. Very readable, entertaining, and above all highly educational. So glad I opted for it.

Too basic if you have any design background
2010-06-22
This book was the text for a User Interface course I was planning on taking over the summer, however I moved and dropped the class. I still had the book though, so I read through it (very quickly, in about 3-4 hours). If you have no concept of design - if you don't know what the color wheel is, if you don't know anything about typography or texture (although, also, what he creates and calls texture is technically a pattern) - maybe this book is for you. There's not a lot of practical examples, no conversation about the tools used (photoshop vs illustrator vs whatever). The author does state that design is difficult to explain, and most good design is reflexive for the designer. A designer has years of experience and training and knows almost instinctively about colors and type (probably because of using bad ones in the past), but if the author couldn't verbalize this, I wonder how he got a book deal to begin with.

I'm rating this 2 stars because at least there were some good resources, like the site for checking colors and typography, but I think for the price there has got to be some better options out there to learn basic design. I was really hoping for a more in-debt UI book but the book doesn't really touch on UI at all, which makes it a random choice of text for the class.
It's ok...
2010-05-24
I was expecting something with graphics, images, examples, but it didn't really have that. I was mostly reading. Which is fine, but it was a bit outdated. The book was in used but good shape though.

Build Your Own HTML Email is a step-by-step guide to creating HTML emails. It begins with an introduction to email covering topics such as: how email design differs to web design; different types of emails; and the anatomy of an email.

The book then shows the reader how to build simple HTML email designs, then goes on to explain more advanced techniques. Finally the book covers important tasks like testing, spam compliance, and known hacks and workarounds.

Easy to read, free sample code and examples. What more do you need?
2010-05-23
With the recent switch I had of all of my newsletter subscriptions (found in upper right of my blogs as well), I wanted to make sure I could give content that pretty much every mail client could read. This book was right on time. Create Stunning HTML Email That Just Works (Disclosure: I received the book as a review copy selection and am allowed to say whatever I wish)

The first thing I realized is that every mail client renders so many parts of HTML email differently. The book is only ~139 pages, but it hits home fast with tons of free sample code to download. The author of the book is with a large email distribution platform, so the knowledge was definitely there. The chapters broke down as follows:

  1. Why Email?

  2. Planning an Email Campaign

  3. Design for the Inbox

  4. Coding Your Emails

  5. Understanding Permission

  6. Selling Email To Your Clients

Chapter 6 was for those that provide solutions to businesses and customers. He did a good job summarizing, but I will skip that part of the review since I read the other chapters twice.

He does an excellent job covering the business case and some basic statistics. But, more importantly, how people interact via email compared to other mediums. From the opening chapter he delves into formatting, structure and client support. I think it was one of the most important areas for anyone to be aware of. With the listing of numerous tables, it showed how every email client provider lacks support for so many areas of tags, formats and just plain simple HTML.

He gives great visual examples from numerous newsletters, makes block representation of successful examples and then gives away about 30 free templates to start using immediately that will work with any client type (outside of text clients of course).

The chapter on permission and some legal requirements was well needed for anyone getting into HTML mail. Some would think that HTML email is past it's time. Web 2.0 is the total future and stop wasting time on just email. After seeing the power of what it can do on my own the past few months, I am sold.
Finally! A current book about HTML email design!
2010-05-06
I have been searching for a book about HTML email design and have finally found it! I just read the entire thing in about 2 hours. Patterson provides great insights and tips on how to design compelling newsletters that every client can see.

If you are an email designer, I definitely recommend this book to you!

Thanks!

Fairly Simplistic Recipes

This book came highly recommended at a recent programming conference. So, I suppose that my expectations were set too high. If you have been working with CSS for awhile, then I do not think that you will find many new and exciting tips in this book. However, if you are new to CSS, then it can be helpful.

Kevin seems like a super guy on sitepoint, but please, kevin, stop writing books. Boring read and far from being well structured. I'm sure kevin is a good coder, but if he happens to code like he writes, his script would be all over the place.

Sorry, I mostly gave it 3 stars because I really like Kevin, but if anyone wants to get a book on php and mysql this is not it.

p.s.

Sitepoint books lately have been bad. I'm starting to think they have a cookie cutter method of writing. I'm still a fan of the forum, but their books are not what they use to be.
Good with Lectures - Bad at Writing! Drink lots of Coffee!
2010-06-13
I read this book and did not make it past Chapter 2.
The book is just boring and very sporadic.

It's like getting lecture on driving and never actually getting in a car. When will these expert understand, you have to be practical, projects before epic explanations.

A variable is like a container, it can hold information, blah blah, I can get that off Google.
Strings are text. Really, wow! I did not know that. Come on!

Kevin Yank is great but on this one, it's a failure.

When a book puts me to sleep, that's the end of it!

Learn how to build impressive ASP.NET 2.0 Websites in both C# and VB from scratch.

Using a practical step-by-step approach, the authors introduce the ASP.NET framework, teach you about database design, and walk you through obtaining, installing and configuring all the freely available software you need to use ASP.NET 2.0. They then show you how to build several real world Web-based applications that you can put to use instantly in your projects.

Readers will learn how to:

Develop a fully functional Corporate Intranet with a dynamic navigation menu Create an email newsletter system using ASP.NET 2.0 Build web forms using web controls, validation controls, and rich controls Program in both C# and VB Handle unforseen errors gracefully using a range of error handling techniques Secure applications using form authentication Use code-behind to streamline code.

This book doesn't force you to choose an ASP.NET language in advance - all code examples are presented in both C# (pronounced see-sharp) and VB. You can choose which one you want to use, and follow-it throughout the book. Best of all, this book doesn't assume any prior programming knowledge!

As an added bonus, this book doesn't force you to choose an ASP.NET language in advance - all code examples are presented in both C# (pronounced see-sharp) and VB.NET. You can choose which one you want to use, and follow-it throughout the book. Best of all, this book doesn't assume any prior ASP.NET knowledge!

Did get what I purchased
2010-05-31
The book I received is not the one I ordered. Though it has the same name as the one I ordered it was an older version (10 years old) most of the coding examples used in the book is out of date.

This will be the last time I buy a book from you.
You are in good hands with this book

I learned the basics of ASP.NET with the second edition of this book. Having skimmed through the latest third edition, it appears the information has been refined even further and includes more material including practical tutorials and advice for deploying your ASP.NET site as well as the inclusion of AJAX.

To my knowledge, it was the first book to incorporate both VB and C#, which was its initial appeal. The author(s) very deliberately choose to avoid the some of the latest trendy topics that could stand to overwhelm or confuse you and instead focus on making sure you know what it is all built on and providing you with enough practical working knowledge of ASP.NET, VB and C# to make you "dangerous". I had no issues getting the code to compile and simply Googled my way through a couple typos in that second edition, which is actually a very healthy learning activity if you are truly engaged in the topic.

It is an easy and engaging read. Nearly all of my questions that arose as I worked through the book were anticipated and addressed at the perfect time. The book is also packed full of practical aside tips and hints that one will encounter in most of the daily ASP.NET development tasks.

Within a short time, I was able to tackle ASP.NET projects at my job. What I hadn't learned from the book, I was able to figure out by leveraging what it had covered. In a nutshell, it was the perfect starting point. From there, I read Imar Spaanjars' excellent Beginning ASP.NET book (always a good idea to learn from at least 2 good sources as a novice) and moved up to the comprehensive professional ASP.NET book(s) by Scott Hanselman & Devin Rader.

Project Management is one of the most important, though least talked about aspects of Web Development.

Meri Williams brings her work experience to the table and lays out clear steps that anyone can follow to get projects done right, and delivered on time.

This book covers:

Why Project Management is important The 6 fundamental truths of project management Getting started: Discovering, Initiating, Planning and Resourcing a project Getting the Job Done: Executing and controlling Keeping it Smooth: Communication, collaboration and managing change Follow through: Ongoing support and maintainence, measuring operational success Resources: Review of various tools, recommended reading, professional resources for project management

Short, and to the point, this book aims to do to provide a solid foundation for anyone who finds themselves responsible for managing a team and executing projects.

The Essence of Project Management
2009-01-10
This book is about the aspects of project management, i.e. an overview of the issues, responsibilities, and challenges that fall in the area of project management. It does not dive into the science and art of project management, i.e. someone should not expect to become a better project manager after reading this book on a project.

The book is lively and engaging, and will be helpful to non-PM stakeholder on a small project. For someone who is interested in an intro to the software project management concepts, I'd recommend "Head First Software Development", and if you are up to the challenge of becoming a project manager on a larger project, read "Head First PMP".
Great book for any web or IT project manager
2008-08-21
This is a great book for anyone interested in project management, or has been given the PM role without any prior training. It's also good for those of us who already think we know it all - I'm sure there'll be gems in it for everyone.

Simply Mind-Boggling
2010-04-22
I have to agree with the others who claim that this book is incredibly misleading. I have a pretty good understanding of programming, and I was still getting headaches by Chapter 3, as everything is presented entirely out of context.

It starts off innocently enough, just giving you some general programming guidelines: variables/functions/loops/conditionals/etc., but then the author launches into an explanation on the Document Object Model, and spends 40 pages explaining it with no context to what it actually means for someone new to Javascript, and no actual examples of how to apply the knowledge.

A good programming book needs to have you writing simple programs from page 1. The only way you can learn what the code really means is by writing it yourself, making your own mistakes, and learning from them.

I have made it past page 100, and there have been ZERO interactive examples. I have been bludgeoned over the head with DOM knowledge, and still have not written even a basic webpage with JS on it. The author just keeps explaining new topics, and doesn't show you how to use any of them or explain what they are actually used for. The book has a very "trust me, this will make sense later" attitude. SitePoint has some great books, but this one is definitely NOT an introductory text on JS.

If it were title something more like "How Javascript Works," I could let it go. But the title implies (well, and it even says so inside) that anyone with knowledge of HTML and CSS should be able to start writing great JS from this book, but I just can't make sense of what is being presented. I would look elsewhere for your JS needs.
Great book, period
2009-08-15
The last time that I visited library, I wanted to pick up something that would explain JS to me and something would allow me to create my own scripts.

Well, this book is exactly what I was looking for - it explains all the intricacies of JavaScript, but also it makes it...*gasp*...fun to study what otherwise seems to be somewhat dry subject.

Granted, I might not be a newbie when it comes to scripting (I know CSS/HTML fairly well), but JS is an entirely different thing altogether - not a full-on programming language, but yet its a bit harder to understand it than, say CSS or stuff related to basic coding.

So kudos to authors for being so thorough in their approach and I can't wait to get to the end of the book and see what I will be able to do later on.
