2008-10-01
This album is a very good compilation album. Compared to others which only have a artists best hits this album has the chart toppers and good songs. The majority of songs are from the 1970's and have that great 70's smooth jazz sound a la Bob James. If you are a fan of Ashford and Simpson and 70's music get this album. The only 80's song in here is Solid which is a great song and brings back memories of when I was in high school watching music video's.

"Somebody Told A Lie" is one of the most beautiful and romantic songs ever written in my humble opinion and I am so happy to have found it again on this compilation!

» Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) pressing of this classic rock album. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008.One of the first concept records.

Like THE WALL, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, the record tells a story, through music and characterization, and achieves this quite well. Not to mention the musical content of the record, which also works. A real departure for the WHO at this point, because they were struggling to right hit singles, and weren't really a hit singles type of band. They were always more of a live band, and this record worked well for them when played live.

I have received two albums; returned the first album because CD#2 would not be recognized by any of the four CD players I put it in. I am sending back #2 for the same problem. I would think others have had this issue and it is not corrected. I will send #2 back for a refund.

Bach: Mass in B minor / McNair, Ziegler, Simpson, Aler, Stone, Paul; Shaw

· Artist: Johann Sebastian Bach | Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus | Robert Shaw | Sylvia McNair | Delores Ziegler | Marietta Simpson | John Aler | William Simpson | Thomas Paul · Binding: Audio CD · Brand: Bach · EAN: 0089408023323 · Label: Telarc · Manufacturer: Telarc · MPN: 80233 · Number Of Discs: 2 · Product Group: Music · Publisher: Telarc · Release Date: 1990-10-10 · Studio: Telarc · UPC: 089408023323
» Robert Shaw's reading of the B Minor Mass is, in one sense at least, just what one would expect: sober and purposeful, beautifully shaped (Shaw is a master architect), it centers on the chorus. Like all of Shaw's choruses, the Atlanta group has that trademark richness of body and blend, and it sings with utter unanimity as though it were one great voice. Shaw opts for marginally broader tempos than those found in most period-instrument performances but is nowhere near as glacial as some interpreters. Yet oddly enough, the approach seems more idealized, and less passionate and expressive, than one might expect from a conductor famous for giving his singers adrenaline rushes. Proof again that one should expect the unexpected from Shaw, as well as the expected. It's part of his fascination. --Ted LibbeySolid, but with presentation issues
2008-05-23
Shaw's final recording of the Mass in B minor is a devotional, almost religious experience, despite being placed in a concert hall.

The performance here is very much cut from the same cloth as his earlier recording made in 1960 after touring all over the U.S. giving this huge piece in one-night stands. Tempi are broad and spacious, the sound rich and full. The soloists are all top rate. The music breathes in several passages wonderfully, especially the closing "Dona nobis pacem." The pathos of the "Et incarnatus" and "Crucifixus" is especially striking.

Shaw's interpretation falls into the traditional side of that tedious "HIP vs. Everything Else" debate, meaning his orchestra and chorus are quite large compared to more recent interpretations.

The complaint, here is this: look VERY CLOSELY at the track list. The Kyrie, Gloria, and Symbolum Nicenum are NOT subdivided into a track for each movement. That's not a detriment to the performance, but it does make the set difficult to work with when studying specific areas within the piece. The Symbolum Nicenum especially is so long, even a track division after, say, the "Et resurrexit" would be preferable to none at all. It's a shame that such a good performance is marred by Telarc's presentation.

Nonetheless, an all-around great reading (but don't miss some of the others, like Robert King or Karl-Friederich Beringer).
Lush...Shaw does it again

Essential Danny Elfman (Singer and founder of "Oingo Boingo")compositions from his early film sound-track work. It's all here and great stuff to put on for your haunted house or Halloween party! Elfman's obsession with the dead comes through throughout!
Great compilation - and that's just the first half.
2005-09-13
I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

The Simpsons: Songs In The Key Of Springfield - Original Music From The Television Series

» Who said musical comedy was dead? Was it you? Fools! There are more shining moments in each of these 39 zippy little numbers than in the complete score of any bloated Broadway dud today. Peppered with original dialogue, and seven renditions of "The Simpsons Main Title Theme" (including Australian, Big Band, and Afro-Cuban), this disc includes beloved originals like "Who Needs the Kwik-E-Mart?" Even better are the scathing parodies: "Oh, Streetcar!" (Tennessee Williams à la community musical theater); "Dr. Zaius" (Falco-meets-Planet of the Apes); and "See My Vest" (Monty Burns's jaunty dissection of Disney's "Be Our Guest"). With celebrity cameos from Tony Bennett, Robert Goulet, and Beverly D'Angelo, Songs is a sparkling tonic to sustain you through the seven dreary days between Sunday evenings. --Kurt B. Reighley Disappointing
2008-04-19
What a disappointment! This was the first Simpson CD I've ever purchased and it is terrible. I watch the Simpsons all the time and I know there are many many great songs on the show. But did they pick any of those great songs? No! It had way too much talking on it, and a couple different Simpson theme song paradies. The songs were short, I guess I was hoping they would elaborate on the songs a bit more. There were only two songs on it that were fun to sing along with. I based my CD choice on the reviews of this product and I don't know where those people were coming from, but this CD is not the one with all the good songs on it, so pick another one or build your own off itunes.

Hi, all. I liked this album. Sibling Riverly reminds me of stuff me and my brother does (but, we aren't brother and sister, we are brother and brother).
A Feel Good Album
2008-08-01
I have always enjoyed this album, ever since its release. It keeps the humor of the show but adds well-produced music to the mix.

While "Do The Bartman" "Deep Deep Trouble" and "Moaning Lisa Blues" are familiar from their association and airings with The Simpsons, it is the original tracks that catch my ear each time.

"Look At All Those Idiots" is such a fun song, with Mr. Burns and Smithers making funny quips over and in between the music.

"Born Under A Bad Sign" is hilariously bad, with Homer trying to put some "soul" into it. The ending is very funny as Homer trails off trying to come up with his own Blues singer name.

The other tracks take themselves a little more seriously, but are very pleasant to listen too. Buy the album already, since they haven;t released "Simpsons Boogie" "Lovely To Love Your Lovin'"or "Simpson Christmas Boogie" yet.

» When champions of The Simpsons contend that the animated TV show is the best-written show on the small screen, they're referring as much to the songs that pop up in most episodes as the dialogue. Well, here's a springboard to the Springfield Sound that Simpsons supporters will find irresistible. The musical hotbed of indeterminate locale has drawn everyone from Sonic Youth to Tony Bennett, both of whom contribute original material to Go Simpsonic. But with a cast that includes the inimitable likes of Krusty the Klown ("Like Father, Like Clown"), Waylon Smithers ("Happy Birthday, Mr. Burns"), and Patty and Selma Bouvier ("We Love to Smoke"), who needs pampered VIPs? Toss in the spirited "Everyone Loves Ned Flanders," Kirk Van Houten's wrenching "Can I Borrow a Feeling?" and the Brothers Four (!?) parody "The Ballad of Jebediah Springfield," and you have a singin' and dancin' hullabaloo to last a lunchtime! --Steven StolderProps to Alf Clausen!
