Gossip Girl: The Complete Fourth Season

» The fourth season of Gossip Girl starts to show a little age; while the fashions are as couture as ever and the scandals the right level of sleaze, the season takes some inexplicable turns. But no season is complete without its parade of troublemakers, so up first is Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg), whose pregnancy announcement at the end of season three throws serious water on Dan's romantic possibilities with Serena (Blake Lively). Then there's Juliet (Katie Cassidy, daughter of '70s teen idol David), an impostor whose elaborate scheme to take down Serena is connected to her past and involves some serious loony-bin activity (Cassidy, who was the best thing on the short-lived Melrose Place reboot, makes a terrific foil--much less irksome than Georgina, who has by now overstayed her welcome). Finally, there's Russell Thorpe (Spin City's Michael Boatman), a ruthless businessman who angles to take over Bass Industries from Chuck (Ed Westwick). But none of these villains hold a candle to the internal evildoing within the Upper East Siders; Dan (Penn Badgley) plots against Chuck, Vanessa (Jessica Szohr) and Jenny (Taylor Momsen) plot against Serena, then turn against each other, mapping both of their exits off the series; Serena and Chuck plot against her mother, Lily (Kelly Rutherford), and finally Lily's sister Carol plots against her by employing her daughter Charlie (Kaylee DeFer). Incomprehensible love matches ensue (the show's creators seem intent on having Serena circle romantic possibilities with… pretty much everyone), but the friendship that naturally evolves between Dan and Blair becomes the season's most pleasant surprise. That Blair becomes the center of a complex romantic web between Chuck and an honest-to-goodness prince (Hugo Becker) steers the season back in the right direction; Meester and Westwick remain the emotional centers of the show and anchor it when it veers too far into Crazytown. --Ellen A. Burlesque (Bilingual)

· Actor: Cher | Christina Aguilera | Eric Dane | Cam Gigandet | Julianne Hough · Aspect Ratio: 2.40:1 · Binding: DVD · Creator (Role: Producer): Donald De Line · Director: Steve Antin · EAN: 0043396373822 · Format: Subtitled | NTSC · Label: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment · Manufacturer: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment · Number Of Items: 1 · Picture Format: Anamorphic Widescreen · Product Group: DVD · Product Type Name: ABIS_DVD · Publisher: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment · Region Code: 1 · Release Date: 2011-03-01 · Running Time (Units: minutes): 119 · SKU: 8K-GY8U-USXM · Studio: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment · UPC: 043396373822
» There is, according to Burlesque, a nightclub on the Sunset Strip that looks like a blend of Cabaret and Moulin Rouge and employs a full contingent of dancers and musicians in the service of a neo-retro-burlesque-blues program. Presiding over the craziness within is Tess, a grande dame who also performs occasionally and who could only, under these circumstances, be played by Cher. Entering the scene is a young leather-lunged hopeful from Iowa named Ali, played by Christina Aguilera in her movie-acting debut. The vibe of this glitzy concoction is more Flashdance than Showgirls, despite prerelease predictions that the film would be a campfest of epic proportions. In fact, it's more cornball than trashy. Ali hits most of the clichés of the genre: defying Tess's skepticism by proving her mettle during an impromptu stage number; flirting with the nice-guy bartender (Cam Gigandet, of Twilight) whose home she shares for a while, in a purely platonic way, of course, just until she gets her feet on the ground; and keeping a wary eye on the high roller (Eric Dane, of Grey's Anatomy) who wants to possess her, because, you see, he takes whatever he likes. And did we mention that Tess is facing foreclosure on the club in a month's time? Seriously, you didn't see that coming? Writer-director Steve Antin has no embarrassment about putting any of this across, which may be why it all feels weirdly innocent, if relentlessly silly. Stanley Tucci revives his gay assistant from The Devil Wears Prada, Alan Cumming lurks about in an undefined role that might well have been filmed months after everybody else, and Kristen Bell enjoys a few wicked-witch moments as Ali's main rival. Aguilera, needless to say, belts out her songs as only someone with a very large voice can, and Cher stops the show with an old-fashioned torch song ("You Haven't Seen the Last of Me") that is clearly designed as a roof-raiser. (And, by gum, it works.) This is a ridiculous movie, but it gets points for never claiming to be anything else. --Robert Horton

» An ambitious young New Yorker (Kristen Bell), disillusioned with romance, takes a whirlwind trip to Rome where she defiantly plucks magic coins from a fountain of love, inexplicably igniting the passion of those who threw them in: a sausage magnate (Danny DeVito), a street magician (John Heder), an adoring painter (Will Arnet) and a self-admiring model (Dax Shepard). But when a charming reporter (Josh Duhamel) pursues her with equal zest, how will she know if his love is the real thing?

You Again [Blu-ray + DVD]

· Actor: Kristen Bell | Betty White | Jamie Lee Curtis | Sigourney Weaver | Odette Yustman · Aspect Ratio: 2.40:1 · Audience Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested) · Binding: Blu-ray · Creator (Role: Writer): Moe Jelline · Director: Andy Fickman · EAN: 0786936810219 · Format: AC-3 | Dolby | DTS Surround Sound | Dubbed | NTSC | Subtitled | Widescreen · Label: Touchstone Home Entertainment · Manufacturer: Touchstone Home Entertainment · MPN: DISBR106224 · Number Of Discs: 2 · Number Of Items: 1 · Package Quantity: 1 · Part Number: DISBR106224 · Picture Format: Widescreen · Product Group: DVD · Product Type Name: ABIS_DVD · Publisher: Touchstone Home Entertainment · Release Date: 2011-02-08 · Running Time (Units: minutes): 105 · SKU: S786936810219 · Studio: Touchstone Home Entertainment · UPC: 786936810219
» Contrary to the advertising campaign, You Again is not a laugh-a-minute comedy bursting with witty comebacks and flying food, but a slower-paced, at-times shallow drama about rivalries, second chances, and people's ability to change. High school was a miserable time for Marni (Kristen Bell), but she's overcome her past experiences and become a successful businesswoman. When her brother Will (James Wolk) announces his impending marriage, Marni is thrilled--at least until she learns that he's marrying her old high-school nemesis Joanna (Odette Yustman). At first, Joanna pretends not to remember Marni, and it appears that she really has changed her ways and become a compassionate adult, but soon a darker truth begins to emerge and things start to get downright ugly. As fate would have it, Joanna's aunt Ramona (Sigourney Weaver) turns out to be the old high-school best friend turned enemy of Marni's mother Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis), and even Marni's grandma Bunny (Betty White) encounters an old rival before the film is done. Despite each of the women's desire to overcome past ill feelings, old wounds have festered and the reunions bring out the worst in everyone involved. Wedding planner Georgia (Kristin Chenoweth) is completely oblivious to everything but her own over-the-top agenda, while Marni's dad/Gail's husband Mark (Victor Garber) and groom Will quickly go from being clueless to completely perplexed by the women's behavior. There are indeed amusing scenes in which the characters duel on the dance floor, throw plates and food, and have some unlucky encounters with an ant bed and a rickety tree house, but generally the film's pace is too slow and the whole thing just feels strained and far-fetched. It's too bad, because it's a waste of talented actors. --Tami Horiuchi
