Very Brady Sequel, a

· Actor: Shelley Long | Gary Cole | Tim Matheson | Christopher Daniel Barnes | Christine Taylor · Audience Rating: PG-13 (Parental Guidance Suggested) · Binding: VHS Tape · Creator (Role: Producer): Alan Ladd Jr. | (Role: Producer): Kelliann Ladd | (Role: Writer): Deborah Kaplan | (Role: Writer): Harry Elfont | (Role: Writer): James Berg | (Role: Writer): Sherwood Schwartz | (Role: Writer): Stan Zimmerman · Director: Arlene Sanford · EAN: 9786304279007 · Format: NTSC · ISBN: 0792143752 · Label: Paramount · Manufacturer: Paramount · Number Of Discs: 1 · Product Group: Video · Product Type Name: ABIS_DVD · Publisher: Paramount · Release Date: 2004-04-01 · Running Time (Units: minutes): 90 · Studio: Paramount · UPC: 097363324430
» This second ironic send-up of the old Sherwood Schwartz sitcom is even funnier than The Brady Bunch Movie. Shelley Long and Gary Cole return as the married heads of the merged family known as the Bradys, and Christopher Daniel Barnes and Christine Taylor reprise their roles as eldest stepsiblings Greg and Marcia. As with the first film, the clever premise finds the Brady clan caught in a kind of '70s time warp, while the rest of the world has moved well into the '90s. Greg is still looking for a "groovy girlfriend," Mr. Brady thinks the idea of a cable that sends 50 channels to one's TV set must be a joke, and Mrs. Brady spends hours at the beauty shop only to look exactly the same as she went in. There's a plot involving an imposter (Tim Matheson) who claims to be Carol's long-lost husband, but the real charge in this comedy comes from the way these pseudohip characters deal with sexual taboos (is there any real reason that Greg and Marcia shouldn't get it on?) and the incredulous reactions of other people. --Tom Keogh

Money Pit, the

· Actor: Tom Hanks | Shelley Long | Alexander Godunov | Maureen Stapleton | Joe Mantegna · Audience Rating: PG (Parental Guidance Suggested) · Binding: VHS Tape · Creator (Role: Cinematographer): Gordon Willis | (Role: Producer): Art Levinson | (Role: Producer): David Giler | (Role: Writer): David Giler | (Role: Producer): Frank Marshall | (Role: Producer): Kathleen Kennedy | (Role: Producer): Steven Spielberg · Director: Richard Benjamin · EAN: 9786300185241 · Format: NTSC · ISBN: 6300185249 · Label: Mca (Universal) · Manufacturer: Mca (Universal) · Number Of Discs: 1 · Package Quantity: 1 · Product Group: Video · Product Type Name: ABIS_VIDEO · Publisher: Mca (Universal) · Release Date: 2001-07-01 · Running Time (Units: minutes): 91 · SKU: 1001-WS1501-A03010-6300185249 · Studio: Mca (Universal) · UPC: 096898038737
» Steven Spielberg produced this underwhelming 1986 effort at a slapstick spin on Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. The pre-Oscar Tom Hanks stars with Shelley Long as a married couple whose efforts to finish construction on their home are sabotaged by costly and sporadically funny accidents. The unfinished domicile becomes a metaphor for their troubled relationship, as evidenced by Long's character's attraction to a madman violinist (Alexander Godunov). Hanks is the only reason at this point to check this film out. Richard Benjamin (My Favorite Year) directs but with no flair or distinction. --Tom Keogh.

» Sometimes a movie works despite all its faults. Outrageous Fortune has a flimsy, formulaic script, so-so production values, and an odd combination of stars, but somehow it's engaging and fun. Shelley Long and Bette Midler play two struggling actresses--one a hoity-toity priss and the other a brassy slob--who learn they've been sleeping with the same guy (Peter Coyote) when he gets blown up in a terrorist assault and they confront each other in the morgue. When they discover that he's still alive, the bickering pair track him down, traipsing across the U.S. in high heels, pursued all the way by government agents, using their dubious acting talents to get them out of tough situations. The absurd plot keeps things moving and director Arthur Hiller (Silver Streak, The Out of Towners) gets cheerful performances out of everyone, particularly the strong supporting cast--including Robert Prosky (Broadcast News, Mrs. Doubtfire) as a pompous acting teacher, comedian George Carlin as a burnt-out would-be Indian, and the underused John Schuck (M*A*S*H, McCabe & Mrs. Miller) as a long-suffering agent. Contrived, cliché-ridden, but just absurd enough to entertain. --Bret Fetzer

Dr. T & the Women

· Actor: Richard Gere | Helen Hunt | Farrah Fawcett | Laura Dern | Shelley Long · Binding: VHS Tape · Creator (Role: Producer): Cindy Cowan | (Role: Producer): David A. Jones | (Role: Producer): David Levy | (Role: Producer): Graham King | (Role: Producer): James McLindon | (Role: Producer): Joshua Astrachan | (Role: Writer): Anne Rapp · Director: Robert Altman · EAN: 0065935135104 · Format: NTSC · Label: Artisan (Universal) · Manufacturer: Artisan (Universal) · Product Group: Video · Product Type Name: ABIS_VIDEO · Publisher: Artisan (Universal) · Release Date: 2002-01-08 · Running Time (Units: minutes): 122 · Studio: Artisan (Universal) · UPC: 065935135104
» Loose-limbed and casual even for a Robert Altman movie, Dr. T & the Women has a sly, offhanded wit that makes up for its ramshackle structure. Richard Gere's eponymous gynecologist seems the model of success: his office is packed daily with the cream of Dallas's society matrons clamoring for an appointment, his home life is blessed with loving wife Farrah Fawcett and daughters Tara Reid and Kate Hudson, and when he needs a break from the estrogen congestion there are always weekends to be spent with his trio of hunting buddies. But on a trip to the mall to shop for Hudson's upcoming nuptials, Fawcett strips naked and leaps about in a waterfall. Her subsequent incarceration in a mental hospital (she's diagnosed with the fictional "Hestia complex," suffering from receiving too much affection) along with the ongoing preparations for the wedding barely make a dent in Gere's charming, compassionate demeanor. Then his golf course hires a new female pro who's everything the other women in his life are not--independent, self-confident, Helen Hunt--and Dr. T finds himself with yet another woman to love. Though the minor characters are mostly nasty little caricatures, the film is not the bitter misogynistic rant its detractors claim it is; the problems in Dr. T's life are placed squarely on his own inability to see that women don't need his genteel protection, and Gere perfectly captures this sweet yet condescending blind spot. --Bruce Reid

» Ron Howard's breakthrough film as a director launched Michael Keaton as a screen comic. In this film, he is teamed with a hangdog Henry Winkler as a pair of night attendants at a city morgue. Thinking entrepreneurially, Keaton (as the flakier half of the team) convinces a reluctant Winkler that they could kill two birds with one stone and use their quiet surroundings to start a call-girl business. The first girl in the stable of these unlikely pimps: Shelley Long, pre-Cheers. Given the rather tasteless subject matter (ever really met a happy hooker?), it's surprisingly good fun, ignited by the chemistry between the nebbish Winkler and the jet-propelled Keaton, who seized this role and used it to shoot him to stardom--and into several years of stinkers. Meanwhile, the film was supposed to help Winkler segue from the Fonz on Happy Days to a career acting in movies, but whatever happened to him? --Marshall Fine
